Dr. Anna Varga is a biologist and forest pedagogue who works in the field of environmental humanities. Her research focuses on environmental history, ethnobiology, floodplain management, silvopastoral systems, environmental education and (re)connection with nature. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pécs, Hungary. She is a former fellow of the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society, LMU Munich.

Her latest postdoc research at the University of Pécs focuses on forest and pasture enclosures in the 19th century and their impact on socio-ecological systems. She is now starting to work on the environmental history of charcoal burning in Central-Eastern Europe as part of a COST project.

During her Visegrad Fellowship, she will work with Dr. Joachim Popek on the impact of enclosure during the 19th century on silvopastoral systems in Hungary and Poland. The project will emphasise the role of enclosure in the conservation of biocultural diversity and the sustainability of forestry and livestock management.
