Patent Granted to the Faculty of Technology and Life Sciences

We are pleased to announce that the University of Rzeszów has been awarded a patent for an innovative "Method for Processing Fruits, Particularly Large-Fruited Cranberries Harvested Using the Wet Method, and a Chamber for Ozone Treatment and UV-C Irradiation of Fruits, Particularly Large-Fruited Cranberries Harvested Using the Wet Method" (Patent No. P.441160). This patent is the result of research conducted by Professor Maciej Balawejder, and Associate Professor Natalia Matłok, from the Faculty of Technology and Life Sciences at the University of Rzeszów.

The developed method aims to enhance the microbiological quality and extend the shelf life of large-fruited cranberries harvested using the wet method. The innovation lies in the continuous combination of ozone treatment and UV-C irradiation, which effectively reduces the presence of pathogens and prolongs the freshness of the fruit. This breakthrough has facilitated the expansion of the existing post-harvest processing line at the largest cranberry producer in Europe.

This achievement is the outcome of the project titled "Innovative Method for Improving the Microbiological Condition and Storage Durability of Large-Fruited Cranberries," funded by the Agency for Restructuring and Modernization of Agriculture (ARiMR). The project was carried out between 2021 and 2022 under the leadership of Associate Professor Natalia Matłok.

The awarded patent represents a significant step toward the implementation of modern technologies in the food industry, contributing to improved fruit quality and storage safety. The inventors plan to continue their research in this field, striving for further advancements in technological processes related to fruit processing and storage. It is also noteworthy that the patented invention received a medal at the ARCA - 20th International Innovation Exhibition.

Congratulations!
