Rzeszów Candidacy for the Title of European City of Sport 2026
During a press conference held at the University Athletics Center, President of Rzeszów, Konrad Fijołek, accompanied by representatives of the University of Rzeszów and distinguished local athletes, officially announced Rzeszów’s candidacy for the title of European City of Sport 2026.
"Today, we officially announce Rzeszów’s candidacy for the title of European City of Sport 2026. Let this message reach Brussels – we are determined to win! Regardless of the outcome, Rzeszów will always be a city of sport," declared President Konrad Fijołek.
The event brought together renowned athletes, including world, European, and Olympic champions such as Anna Wielgosz, Łukasz Różański, Zuzanna Wielgos, and Oliwier Wdowik, alongside many other accomplished sports figures. Their presence and support underscored Rzeszów’s commitment to securing this prestigious title.
Notably, many of these elite athletes are directly affiliated with the University of Rzeszów—as students, alumni, or faculty members. They proudly represent not only the city of Rzeszów but also our university on the international stage. Their achievements serve as a testament to the university’s role in fostering both academic and athletic excellence.
The press conference took place at the University Athletics Center, a state-of-the-art facility that has long served as a training ground for students, faculty, and professional athletes. It is here that sportspeople prepare for national, European, and global competitions.
"This very facility is where Olympians train. As we embark on this application process for such a prestigious award, I encourage everyone to come here, train, and develop their skills. As an academic institution, we are committed not only to educating young Poles but also to caring for the well-being of our residents—because that is the role of a university. Competing for the title of European City of Sport is about promoting a lifestyle that extends far beyond the competition itself. We want Rzeszów to be recognized as a leading center of sport and health in Poland and across Europe," stated Professor Adam Reich – Rector of the University of Rzeszów.
The University Athletics Center is a cutting-edge sports complex, offering optimal training conditions for both professional athletes and sports enthusiasts. Equipped with a full-sized athletics track, professional strength training facilities, and modern training rooms, it fosters comprehensive athletic development. Additionally, the center conducts research on physical fitness and endurance, further solidifying the University of Rzeszów’s reputation for integrating science and sports at the highest level.
As both an academic and sports-driven city, Rzeszów possesses exceptional potential to claim this prestigious title. We proudly support this initiative and invite everyone to actively participate in promoting a healthy, active lifestyle and a passion for sports.
