The topic of my dissertation is: „The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine on the operations of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)”
Between 2020 and 2023, the world and the economy experienced two key events that revolutionised the business environment for companies. These were the COVID-19 pandemic and the armed conflict in Ukraine. Both the pandemic and the war in Ukraine affected the business environment, introducing changes at the macro and micro level. As a result of the literature analysis, it was found that businesses, especially SMEs located in border regions such as Podkarpackie and Lubelskie Voivodeships, were affected by these crises in a variety of ways. These companies experienced numerous difficulties, ranging from the suspension of operations during the lockdown period, to changes in demand and supply, to organisational modifications. Faced with these changes, companies were forced to implement preventive measures to minimise the negative effects.
The identified research gap points to the need for a deeper understanding of the impact and consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine on SME operations. Given the ongoing and complex natures of both crises, detailed research is needed to identify the adaptive actions of businesses in the face of these challenges. The results of this research have the potential to enrich economic knowledge in the area of entrepreneurship and can inspire further research. The results can also serve as a basis for entrepreneurs to make decisions in the face of future crises. The business model formulated during the creation of the dissertation can be implemented in enterprises operating in the Podkarpackie and Lubelskie Voivodeships, contributing to their competitiveness on the market. This dissertation not only aims to explore and understand the impact of the pandemic and conflict in Ukraine on SMEs, but also proposes practical solutions and strategies that can help businesses in the future. I believe that my dissertation will contribute to filling an existing research gap and will be of both theoretical and practical relevance to the academic and business community.
