The topic of my dissertation is: „Importance of energy transition in rural development in the peripheral regions”
The current state of knowledge on the subject under consideration is based mainly on the experience of Western European countries, where the energy transition process has been going on for more than twenty years, but is characterized by different dynamics and takes place in a different economic reality from Poland. Polish scientific studies in this context mainly cover the topic of renewable energy sources and are based on analyses of development strategies, packages of policy initiatives at the level of the European Union and strategic documents that aim to strive for climate neutrality through energy transition processes. The main theoretical concept around which the author undertakes his deliberations is the concept of sustainable development. In it, the basic problem of economic development is manifested in the conflict of ecological and economic goals. The result of this conflict is an ecological crisis, understood both as the rapid depletion of non-renewable resources and their decreasing availability for future generations, and the deteriorating quality of the environment. The answer to this problem can be the realization of the main goal of the energy transition which is the complete replacement of non-renewable energy sources in the energy mix with renewable energy sources, increasing energy efficiency and energy conservation. However, a review of domestic and foreign literature has indicated a lack of theoretical and empirical analysis on the identification of entities that can be counted as part of the energy transition sector and, through their activities, be part of the energy transition process in Poland. In the debate on the future of the Polish energy sector, there is almost no room for reflection on the economic entities that constitute its background. The identified research gap indicates a lack of precise estimates indicating the expected contribution of businesses to the achievement of energy transition goals in peripheral areas. In turn, the lack of recognition of the current and planned activities of energy transition entities makes it difficult to assess the impact they currently have and may have in the future on achieving energy transition goals in the Subcarpathian Voivodeship. Identification of the business sector that contributes to the achievement of the set goals in the context of reducing non-renewable energy consumption and improving energy efficiency is a key issue for effective financing of entities that can accelerate energy transition processes and influence the effective development of peripheral areas.
The dissertation topic will, to some extent, help fill the research gap and contribute to supporting the energy transition process. The research will result in the detailed identification of key industries for the development of the energy transition, which will allow the effective management of financial resources allocated for its development. Given the utilitarian significance of the planned research, it is important to emphasize the possibility, need and necessity of its implementation in economic reality, which analogously can be done at different levels of generality. At the macro level, the results of the research can be used by decision-makers in the process of strategic long-term planning for the development of the country and the economy, taking into account the significant role of state interventionism in the energy transition process. The expected results of the research will also be useful at the meso level for local governments in the reallocation of financial resources to support entities that effectively contribute to the energy transition process, and at the micro level for enterprises from the point of view of development strategies in line with the strategy of sustainable development and regional conditions, and for residents of peripheral regions, for whom the energy transition and, more broadly, equitable transformation is an opportunity for development and improvement of the quality of life.
