The topic of my dissertation is „Father Marcin Kromer in the service of King Zygmunt August and the Crown”

The planned doctoral dissertation aims to introduce the figure of Father Marcin Kromer (1512-1589), mainly as a diplomat. The outstanding Polish clergyman, writer, humanist, historian, diplomat has not yet had a modern comprehensive scientific biography. The aspects of the writing, historiographic and even partially pastoral activity of Marcin Kromer have been developed extensively and thoroughly in recent years. Unfortunately, the public activity of Marcin Kromer for the benefit of the state and the Jagiellonian dynasty has still not been fully developed. On the other hand, there are significant gaps and errors in scientific publications. This mainly applies to diplomatic activities.

The aim of the dissertation is to show the stages of Marcin Kromer's career and the factors that made it possible (origin, education, officials and protectors, contacts with the elite of state power and the royal court). Directly related to this question is the question of Polish diplomacy and its targets. Delving into the nuances of Kromer's diplomatic activity should also shed new light on the problems of Polish domestic and foreign policy, especially during the reign of Sigismund Augustus. Kromer took an active part in solving almost all significant problems of the time (royal affairs in the Holy See, disputes with the Habsburgs, the problem of the king's marriage, „Neapolitan sums”, the Livonian question, Prussian problems). The basic sources that will be used to elaborate the subject matter will be, first of all, the products of the royal chancellery (credentials, parliamentary instructions, etc.), private letters, accounts and diaries. Their analysis will allow you to collect the necessary information, which, when systematized, will facilitate the development of selected issues from the research issues undertaken.

The expected result will also be an inside look at the organization of diplomacy in 16th-century Poland. The doctoral thesis will probably bring new content to the diplomatic relations of the Jagiellonian and Habsburg houses. The state of knowledge about the problem of „Neapolitan sums” and the unsuccessful marriage of Sigismund Augustus with Catherine Habsburg will probably expand. The same will be true of the issues of the First Northern War (1563-1570), which is marginalized in Polish historiography and is often perceived very subjectively in foreign literature. It should be expected that the work will introduce M. Kromer as a Polish diplomat and, on the other hand, establish the rules of diplomacy in Central Europe, especially in Poland, during the reign of the last Jagiellonians.
