The topic of my dissertation is: The Impact of Grit, Extraversion and International Posture on Polish Secondary School learners’ L2 Willingness to Communicate”

My main area of interest is second language learning and teaching with a special emphasis on individual differences.

My research project seeks to examine the issue of willingness to communicate in the context of second language acquisition (L2 WTC). This construct refers to an individual’s inclination or readiness to initiate and participate in communication in the target language, which is largely dependent on several personality traits as well as situational variables. Its undoubtedly multifaceted nature makes it a key factor for both researchers and practitioners aiming to improve effective communication skills among second language learners. As active use of a foreign language is the basis of language proficiency, the claim that the main purpose of language learning is to stimulate willingness to communicate seems to be an irrefutable argument. It has assumed even greater importance now, in the age of globalisation, when the need for effective communication has become crucial in the world of travel, international contacts and immigration. Given complexity of the issue and the fact that, despite numerous studies, it has not yet been possible to conclusively establish why some students are eager to interact in a foreign language while others avoid it, this research makes another attempt to investigate the factors which shape a foreign language learner’s willingness to communicate, focusing mostly on: L2 grit, extraversion and international posture.
