Opis tematu badawczego / Description of the research topic	Michael Novak (1933–2017) był amerykańskim filozofem o słowackich korzeniach i ogólnie ciepłym stosunku do Europy Środkowej. W wielu swoich książkach powracał do początków swoich dziadków i ich doświadczeń życia w tym regionie przed emigracją do USA. W swojej książce Wolne osoby a dobro wspólne (1989) Michael Novak przedstawił interesującą ideę osiągania dobra wspólnego na wzór wiejskiego targowiska (targu), na którym każdy realizuje swoje interesy i potrzeby swobodnie, ale we wzajemnej współpracy. Ostatecznie prowadzi to do osiągnięcia dobra wspólnego poprzez praktyczną inteligencję. Choć nie jest to system idealny, to jest przede wszystkim praktyczny i funkcjonalny. Ponieważ jednak istnieją także interesy egoistyczne lub egoistyczne, istnieją pewne instytucje społeczne, których zadaniem jest dbanie o to, aby rynek nie był wykorzystywany do masowego łamania zasad. Bardzo ważnym momentem jego koncepcji jest przecięcie podstawowych wartości liberalizmu, czyli wolności i praw jednostki z konserwatywnym akcentem na cnoty i wartości moralne, do których zalicza się godność człowieka, prawa człowieka i wiele innych wartości.	Michael Novak (1933–2017) was an American philosopher with Slovak roots and a warm relationship to Central Europe in general. In many of his books, he returned to the origins of his grandparents and their experiences of life in this region before their emigration to the USA. In his book Free Persons and the Common Good (1989), Michael Novak presented an interesting idea of achieving the common good in the manner of a village market (fair), where everyone fulfils their own interests and needs freely but in mutual cooperation. Ultimately, this leads to the achievement of the common good through practical intelligence. Although it is not a perfect system, it is mainly practical and functional. However, since there are also egoistic or selfish interests, there are certain social institutions whose task is to ensure that the marketplace is not abused for mass violation of the rules. A very important moment of its concept is the intersection of the basic values of liberalism, i.e., freedom and individual rights with a conservative emphasis on virtues and moral values, among which are human dignity, human rights, and many other values.
